The Progressive Goal Attainment Program (PGAP)
Each year, injury or illness cause an alarming amount of people to become disabled. The Progressive Goal Attainment Program (PGAP) was designed to control and alleviate the severity of disability that can occur after injury or illness.
FunctionWise has 3 PGAP providers that can assist you with Return to Work (RTW) rehabilitation.
About the program?
PGAP is a 10-week structured program designed for treating psychosocial difficulties in a variety of diagnoses, including physical and mental diagnoses. The program aims to facilitate participation in activities of daily living with the goal of enabling an individual to return to work. The program is designed to assist the individual with setting goals and improving function through a step-by-step guided activity program.
Goals of PGAP
The prime goals of PGAP are to:
- Reduce the mental and emotional barriers that hinder the rehabilitation process.
- Help re-establish life-role activities.
- Increase the quality of life and to assist return-to-work function and ultimately better the outcome of RTW programs.
PGAP is the first disability prevention program targeted towards mental and emotional risk factors for permanent disability. It is based on recent research that supports the relevance of psychological and emotional readiness for return to work outcomes.
PGAP has been shown to be beneficial in assisting individuals who have sustained musculoskeletal injuries, chronic low back pain and fibromyalgia, as well as debilitating mental health conditions such as depression and PTSD.
Who can benefit from PGAP
Not all clients are candidates for PGAP. Look out for the following signs and symptoms that may indicate that the client can benefit from PGAP:
- Intervention aimed at symptom reduction is not successful despite favorable prognosis.
- “Symptom stabilization” has been achieved, yet the client remains occupationally disabled.
- The client does not participate in daily activities and follows a passive lifestyle.
- Client experiences a high level of disability associated with a health or mental health condition.
